FIELD OF ROSES

I've never seen so many roses
A plethora of shades and different breeds
Outside a small town in Virginia
The most beautiful thing I've ever seen

Each one was pruned to perfection
Statues and fountains in between
Some climbing ornate trellises
Others so big they were like trees

I pulled into the local market
Talked to a clerk so old and bent
Said you should advertise those roses
They are nothing short of Heaven sent

A wonderful smile lit his face up
He said lady that’s exactly what they are
They heal the people of our township
Every rugged scar and broken heart
He said…

~~~*Chorus*~~~
Every time a hero dies
That field is where we give them life
Something we can see when they are gone
A rose is planted, and it blooms
Though no body’s been entombed
Through the rose, a loved one can live on
Our heroes who go off to war
Leave us wondering how they are
Some of them just do not make it home
God knows…
That’s when someone plants a rose
~~*~~
I drove back to that field of roses
Feeling humbled, knowing now, what I do
On the ground, beneath each bush, was a brass plate
Every one shined as if brand new
A name, the year, the war, or the conflict
From this year back to 1942
The loved ones lost for this great country
Nothing can compare I swear to you
I spent the whole day in that field of roses
With their perfume blowing on the breeze
Drinking in the beauty and the knowledge
Each one meant someone had died for me
I smiled at those coming and going
Thinking of the brave each war consumes
These people planted roses in their honor
Though they are gone the rose will always bloom
~~~*Chorus*~~~
Every time a hero dies
This field is where they give them life
Something they can see when they are gone
A rose is planted and it blooms
Though no body’s been entombed
Through the rose, a loved one can live on
Their heroes who go off to war
Leave them wondering how they are
Some of them just do not make it home
God knows…
That’s when someone plants a rose
~~*~~
