TESTIFIED

Johnny Marshal's trial was set
For the tenth of June
He had nine deaths on his hands
And folks to answer to
No Attorney wanted near him
The judge said it's the law
For the first time in his courtroom
Lawyers were drawing straws
Sam De Luca drew the short one
Felt his blood chill inside
The others said they'd help him
But relief was in their eyes
They warned him...

~~~*Chorus*~~~
Don't ever let a Mother testify
Someone on that jury's
Going to cave in when she cries
Please, I beg you
Don't let my baby die
~~*~~
The tenth of June couldn't come too soon
De Luca looked like Hell
The courtroom was overflowing
And the hatred you could smell
They thought that Sam had lost it
When half way through the trial
He called on Johnny's Mother
Looked at them all, and smiled
They'd warned him...
~~~*Chorus*~~~
Don't ever let a Mother testify
Someone on that jury's
Going to cave in when she cries
Please, I beg you
Don't let my baby die
~~*~~

Johnny shifted in his chair
When his Ma turned to him and stared
Then nodded to the Jury, and raised her hand
Then she looked at Sam
He said if convicted
Johnny Marshal will be hung
Tell me about your Son, ma'am
Start back when he was young

There was no fond look in her eyes
She opened up and testified
Said he was explosive as a child
And as he grew, other people knew
To lock their doors, and hide, when he went wild
Now he's like a vile wind
Doesn't blow things clean
Just evil in
I'm not going to plead you for his life
I've testified

Johnny Marshal hung his head
Said I change my plea, every word I said
I'm as guilty as Mama testified
 Mama doesn't lie
She testified
~~*~~
