NEW ALLEGIANCE

He kept to himself for his family’s sake
Had to protect his Daddy, and his Uncle Jake
That changed in September, his first day of school
She had bay-brown eyes, and long golden curls

His Daddy and Jake had an illegal still
Hidden in the evergreens on Hawkins Hill
You had to pass their cabin to get up there
And they counted on Sam to protect their wares

His home was a prison where he went to sleep
And her arms were the haven that he chose to seek
His Daddy never noticed his change of heart
Just so his eyes were keen, and his ears were sharp

~~~*1st Chorus*~~~
He was clean with a gun
Skilled with the knife
His blood ran loyal
For all his life
He’d always been
A bootlegger’s Son
But a new allegiance
Had just begun
The anarchy was done
His heart was won
~~*~~
He heard gunfire up on Hawkins hill
Wondered how the Feds had found the still
Racing over rocks, with his gun in hand
Thinking he may die, or have to kill a man
Her image grabbed his mind like a vise of steel
For the first time he staggered
Over what to feel.....
Could freedom be real.....
He gave up his allegiance
As the sunbeams came through the evergreens
He threw down his gun, traded it for dreams
The feds took his Daddy and Jake to jail
Sam didn’t flinch when they said he’d failed
He parted his lips to set the laughter free
When he saw her sitting in the Feds front seat
She begged him to forgive her for what she’d done
He placed her hand on his heart, and said it’s won…
I have a new allegiance
~~*~~
~~~*Final Chorus*~~~
He was clean with a gun
Skilled with the knife
His blood ran loyal
For all his life
He’d always been
A bootlegger’s Son
But a new allegiance
Was born of love
The anarchy was done
His heart was won
~~*~~
