You couldn't scrape up a penny
In the dump that we called home
Our Mother worked two full time jobs
And us kids stayed there alone
She'd finally join us, looking tired
Always bringing scraps to eat
She'd take off her old blue coat
And the worn shoes from her feet
~~~*1st Chorus*~~~
She would smile...
And look at us, like she'd been gone ten years
She say, Oh Lord, I've missed you so
Come and welcome Mommy home
She'd hug us...
Ask, do you hear my heart
And we would laugh
That was the best part
~~*~~
There was not a cross word spoken
With nothing to fight about
Checked out books from the library
We took turns reading aloud
Yeah, we all braced ourselves for school
We knew well that we'd be teased
But we were three, against them all
And there was free lunch to eat
~~~*Chorus*~~~
And a smile...
She'd look at us, like we'd been gone ten years
She'd say, Oh Lord, I've missed you so
Come here for your welcome home
She'd hug us...
Ask, do you hear my heart
And we would laugh
That was the best part
~~*~~
~~~*Finale*~~~
I remember my childhood
Whenever things get hard
And, I smile...
Cause that was the best part
~~*~~
