LADY AT THE WINDOW

I lost my Mother
When I was fourteen
She drank until she couldn't
But was always good to me

And my little Brother
He was only ten
Dad's hands on my shoulders
Said its time to be a man

We were waiting for the bus
When the neighbor's curtains moved
I knew that she was watching us
Didn't have much else to do

Mom had said...Be nice to her
She was always alone
Bound to a wheelchair
From childhood Polio

~~~*Chorus*~~~
She would watch us from her window
Sometimes she would wave
It gave us a sense that someone cared
As we started out our day
And she would be there waiting
When we got off the bus
The lady at the window
Watching over us
~~*~~
We went to visit her
One day when we got home
She said its very nice to meet you
Come in from the cold
Asked how we were faring
With our Dad gone on the road
Said she'd watched from the window
The day our parents brought us home
Tiny little babies
All wrapped up in blue
I watched you grow up in your front yard
You were both my greatest view
She served us little sandwiches
And poured us some sweet tea
When night began to wander in
We didn't want to leave
~~~*Chorus*~~~
She would watch us from her window
Sometimes she would wave
It gave us a sense that someone cared
As we started out our day
And she would be there waiting
When we got off the bus
The lady at the window
Watching over us
~~*~~

Dad would come and go
We went on with our lives
Went to see the lady
Whenever we had time

I got my driver's license
The day I turned sixteen
Went and asked the lady
To go for a ride with me

My Brother helped me put her
In the front seat of the car
We headed for the seashore
It really wasn't very far

She laughed like a young girl
Taken back in time
Told me that this had to be
The best day of her life

Time...claims its victims
And it was her time to leave
When the curtain didn't move one day
I knocked then used my key

She was sitting by the window
With something in her hand
A picture of the seashore
And her bottle full of sand

~~~*Final Chorus*~~~
She would watch us from her window
She would smile and wave
Made sure we knew that someone cared
As we started out our day
And she would be there waiting
Always welcomed both of us
The lady at the window
The friend we came to love
